The next divisional game was against Sayreville where the girls endured another close loss with a score of 45-46. However, the next game the girls were victorious with a 43-32 win against North Brunswick.
The girls had two wins this season against top teams. South Plainfield was the first win. At the time the girls’ team played South Plainfield, South Plainfield was the number one team in the county. The game ended with a 40-41 score. The top scorer in the game was Kristen Wright with 15 points. Wright explained, “Beating South Plainfield so early in the year gave us the boost we needed to get through the rest of the season.”
Bishop George Ahr, with a record of 16-8 in the division was the second “major” team Colonia beat. Colonia won the game 52-36 for the first time in five years. Simran Sangu, top rebounder for the team, ended the game with 18 rebounds and 11 points. 4 out of the 5 starters on the Colonia team scored double digits. Sangu stated, “To come back and beat Bishop Ahr was a great achievement for our team and gave us a huge confidence boost.”
The CHS Girls’ Basketball Team has 3 major assets: 2 double digit scorers and a double digit rebounder. Sangu ended the divisional season with 227 rebounds and 140 points. Wright ended the season with 256 points and Madison Stanley, freshmen, ended the season with 361 points and 171 rebounds. Stanley is a freshman on track to score 1000 points, when questioned about this she said, “It feels good to be having a good season and to be such a big contributor my team.”
When asked Sangu, Stanley, and Wright came to the conclusion that Woodbridge and Sayreville were the two toughest teams to play. The girls lost against Woodbridge and played Sayreville three times with each game only being decided by a few points. Coach Biri stated that “every game is a tough game if we don’t do the little things.”
To summarize the season, Coach Biri said, “We’ve played some good games and we’ve played in some close games. We improved from last year and finished top 10 in the county, overall, I’m happy with where we ended” About the team’s chances entering States, Biri remarked,“ It comes down to that day; any team can come in and get it done.” Coach Biri is happy about the season and excited for next season as well. The goal, as always, according to Coach Biri is “to improve from last year.”
