In 1945 in the midst of World War II, the U.S. military wins a key battle a raises the American flag up in Iwo Jima. The United States had no intentions of getting themselves involved with the war, they merely supported their allies. However on December 7th 1941, Japan bombed the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor. The next day war was declared on Japan and the U.S. began their “Island Hopping” campaign through the Pacific. One of those Islands was Iwo Jima which played a crucial role in reaching Japan. after days of blood filled action, The U.S. came out victorious and was able to place the American flag atop the island. This lead way to some of the most famous photos in American history taken by Louis Lowery and Joe Rosenthal.
