Quote of the Day

By: Rebecca Melton, Spring Editor & Reporter

Luc de Clapiers (1715-1747) was a minor French writer and moralist. De Clapiers published a series of essays anonymously a year before his death, having been encouraged by his close friend Voltaire to do so. He had a career in the military prior to gaining interest in writing, his military career beginning at age 17. After publishing his first work, Voltaire asked him to publish a second with better diction. The second edition was published the year of his death. He died at age 31 of poor health.
