On this day in history, the first Supreme Court was established. Passed by Congress and former president George Washington the Judiciary Act of 1789.

On this day in 1789, former president George Washington signed the Judiciary Act of 1789 which was also passed by Congress. The act established the Supreme Court of the U.S. as a group made up of six justices who would serve on the court until death or retirement.
