Chiefs top 49ers to secure second straight Super Bowl

According to ABC 7, both quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy, were both in elementary school the last time an NFL team won consecutive Super Bowls.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs topped the 49ers by a score of 25-22 in Super Bowl 58. This win makes them the first team to go back to back since the 2004/2005 Patriots. It is Kansas City’s 3rd win in 5 years, officially making them a dynasty.

Patrick Mahomes led another impressive final drive. He capped it off with a 3 yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman to secure victory for the Chiefs. They are the ninth team to repeat as Super Bowl champs.

The first three quarters of the game were filled with errors and mostly uneventful until the action-packed 4th quarter. This was the second Super Bowl to go into overtime since the Falcons-Patriots Super Bowl.

The 49ers drove down for a field goal on the first possession of overtime. The Chiefs trailed 22-19 when they began their first drive. Mahomes made 2 big plays, rushing for a clutch 4th down conversion and then scrambling 19 yards. His performance in the 4th quarter and overtime was enough for Mahomes to earn his 3rd Super Bowl MVP.

Mahomes and Andy Reid are now 1 step closer to Tom Brady and Bill Belicheck who won 6 rings in 20 years. They are now halfway there with their 3rd Super Bowl in 7 years.

Mahomes is now the second youngest quarterback to win 3 super bowls and the 4th quarterback to accomplish this feat. The only other quarterbacks to accomplish this are Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, and Tom Brady.

It didn’t look good for the Chiefs in the first half. In the second quarter, a frustrated Travis Kelce pushed head coach Andy Reid in a heated exchange on the sideline following a fumble by Isiah Pacheco.

The action started after a miscue by the 49ers special teams. Punt Returner Ray-Ray McCloud failed to pick up a punt that hit teammate Darrell Luter Jr.’s leg and the Cheifs recovered on the San Francisco 16. This mistake allowed for the Chiefs to capitalize, ending the drive with a touchdown pass to Marquez Valdez-Scantling for a 13-10 lead.

Brock Purdy and the 49ers answered with a touchdown of their own but a missed extra point set up a Chiefs field goal to tie the Super Bowl.

Wide Receiver Jauan Jennings caught a touchdown and threw for one on a trick play. The only other player to throw for a touchdown and catch one in a Super Bowl is Nick Foles.

Niners kicker Jake Moody made a 53 yard field goal to give the Niners a 19-16 lead with less than 2 minutes left in regulation. The Chiefs responded when Mahomes connected with Kelce for a 22 yard gain to set up Harrison Butker’s game-tying kick.

Kansas City’s Trent McDuffie got called for holding on a crucial 3rd down play, extending the 49ers opening drive in overtime. Purdy drove the Niners to the Kansas City 9 but they were forced to settle for a field goal. Niners stars Purdy and Christian McCaffery led the Niners to an early 10-0 lead. This was familiar territory for the Chiefs as they have trailed by 10 in all three of their super bowl wins.

Although Mahomes appeared to get off to a rocky start, throwing a bad interception in the third quarter. He managed to bounce back, finishing 34/46 with 333 passing yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Chiefs weren’t as dominant in the regular season as they have been in the past. They entered the postseason as the AFC’s Number 3 seed. They won on the road against the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens. These were the first two road playoff games of Patrick Mahomes’ career.

Kyle Shanahan now drops to 0-2 in the Super Bowl as a head coach. This is his third Super Bowl heartbreak, however none of them can be worse than him witnessing the Falcons blowing a 28-3 deficit to Tom Brady and the Patriots.

Post Malone sang “America the Beautiful”, Reba McEntire sang the national anthem and Usher gave an entertaining performance at the halftime show.

Chiefs fans will celebrate Wednesday at the championship parade.
