The tournament ended with California beating West Virginia by a tight score of 71-70. Despite losing in the finals, future NBA legend, Jerry West was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. In the prior round, the California Bears bested Cincinnati and future Hall of Famer, Oscar Robertson. West dominated the game offensively with a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds. Despite West’s impressive showing, the Bears rallied behind Danny Fitzpatrick with 20 points, Bob Dalton with 15 points and Darrall Imhoff with 10 points and 9 boards. California finished 25-4 on a 16 game win streak. They made the finals the year later but were easily beaten by Ohio State.
