During his illustrious career, legendary pitcher Whitey Ford pitched 3,170 innings in total. He completed all nine innings eight times. His longest outing came against the Washington Senators when he managed to pitch a whopping 14 shutout innings. The Yankees held a 5-3 record on the season prior to the game and had been on a roll, finishing in first place the last 4 seasons. It was expected that 1959 would be no exception. On the other hand, their opponent, the Washington Senators had struggled, finishing in last place in three of the last four years.

Throughout the game, the Senators never got a runner past second base. Ford gave up seven hits and walked seven, but he managed to keep the game scoreless throughout. With the game scoreless through nine innings, Ford was scheduled as the lead-off hitter for the 10th inning. He managed to hit a double and make his way to third base but was stranded when Mickey Mantle grounded out to second.

The scoreless tie broke at the top of the 14th inning when Bill Skowron hit his third home run of the season. Ford closed out the game giving up a ground out to second base.

The game took 3 hours and 40 minutes to complete the game. Whitey Ford finished the game giving up seven hits, seven walks, 0 runs and striking out 15.
