Two-time MVP, Roger Maris began his journey to break Babe Ruth’s home run record in a game against the Tigers. Ruth’s record of 60 home runs had stood for 34 years until the final game of the 1961 season, when Maris hit the historic 61st homer of his MVP campaign. Maris’s record stood until 1998 when Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire each broke the 61 mark. McGwire’s 70 homers remained the record only until 2001 when Barry Bonds hit the current record of 73 homers in a single season. Maris still held the American League home run record until recently in 2022 when Aaron Judge hit a new AL record of 62 home runs, which ranks 7th all-time.
