One of the most iconic moments in baseball history came in game 3 of the 1932 Fall Classic between the Yankees and the Cubs.
With the game tied 4-4 after a 3-run homer by Ruth and a solo shot by Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, Ruth stepped up to the plate. Ruth had already established himself as a baseball legend, having forever changed the way the game was played through his incredible hitting power. With a 2-2 count, Ruth seemed to point two finger towards center field in response to heckling from the Cubs’ dugout. He belted the next pitch deep into the center field seats.
Ruth later confirmed that he did, in fact, call his shot. On the contrary, pitcher Charlie Root claimed Ruth gave two fingers to the crowd to indicate he had 2 strikes on him.
Decades later, Ruth’s called shot is still a popular debate among baseball fans and remains in MLB folkore.
