Babe Ruth, widely considered one of the best baseball players ever, became well-known for his prowess as a hitter. However, one of his longer standing records was set as a pitcher.
Before he became the most feared hitter in baseball, he was considered one of the league’s best on the mound.
Ruth had set a record for 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in a World Series. This record stood for 43 years before Hall of Famer Whitey Ford finally broke it.
Ford was just as good at winning big games as Ruth was at hitting home runs. With 236 wins on his career, Ford holds the record for most pitcher wins in Yankee history.
Since retiring in 1967, Ford still holds Fall Classic records in wins(10) and strikeouts(94).
Ford’s streak began in the 1960 Fall Classic. In 1961, Ford had what would go on to be his best year ever, posting a 25-4 record while leading the league with 283 innings pitched on his way to a Cy Young award.
Ford went on to throw 33 2/3 scoreless innings before finally giving up a run. Ford’s overall winning percentage of .690 is the best in baseball’s modern era.
