Before becoming one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, Babe Ruth was making headlines as one of the top pitchers in the game. Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators was also among the best pitchers in the league at the time and the two found themselves facing off against each other early in the 1917 season.
Ruth was indispensable during the game, pitching a shutout and driving in the only run of the game to lead Boston to a 1-0 win over Johnson and the Senators.
