Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets was one of the best pitchers of the decade of the 1980s, but faced a suspension in the 1995 season following a positive drug test.
He made his return in 1996, this time as a Yankee. He was far less efficient than he was in his best years with the Mets. He entered this game 0-3 but he was up against the worst hitting team in baseball, the Detroit Tigers. However, in spite of the weak competition, he opened the first inning giving up three runs on two hits. He eventually settled in and got his first win in the pinstripes.
Prior to his substance abuse, Gooden was one of the MLB’s best pitchers. He took home a Cy Young award in 1985 with an outstanding 24-4 record.
