Cubs Hall of Famer, Ernie Banks became the ninth person to reach 500 career home runs early on in the 1970 season. At the age of 39, Banks had just come off his first season with 100+ strikeouts, but still managed to earn his 14th All-Star game selection.
Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron rounded out the top 3 home run leaders at the time and Aaron and Mays were the only active players with 500 homers in 1970.
Unfortunately, injuries held Banks to just 72 games in 1970 and eventually retired in 1971. He ended his career with 512 home runs, 1,636 RBIs and won 2 NL MVP awards. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977.
