Should Cricket be played in schools?
Cricket may be a fun game for most of the world, although in schools cricket can be frustrating to many. Students face unfair play, cheating, and bad sportsmanship.
It can also become an issue when there isn’t a fair umpire in these schools and that may have a bias towards one team.
What is Cricket?
Cricket is played with a bat and ball between two teams with eleven players each. The yard measures up to 22 yards with an oval-shaped area with a rectangular center.
Two sets of three sticks are known as the wickets. These determine whether a player is still in the game or not, depending on whether they are knocked down or intended to be knocked down.
How to play Cricket?
Cricket is played between two teams, each with 50 overs, where one over consists of 6 balls. They have 300 balls to score from. Each team plays until they are all out or they have used up their overs. Each bowler can only bowl 1 over at a time.
In each inning, one team bats while the other fields. The fielders are to restrict the team batting from scoring and receiving points/runs possibly even dismissing the players during the game.
Benefits of Cricket in Schools
Cricket can help school students become more physically fit, develop reflexes, improve teamwork, and develop life skills. Cricket can teach others to be supportive and patient with one another if they aren’t doing well during the game, which could teach them that there are better opportunities for them in any game.
It can also help students with quick thinking and decision-making. When games are changing their scenarios rapidly which enhances their thinking skills.
Negative Aspects in Schools
Cricket can be a fun sport, although it is a very expensive sport. Not only that, but it is very time-consuming. Sometimes matches take several hours for the game to come to an end.
“Some 54% of eight-to-16-year-olds say they witness bad sportsmanship in every single game they play, according to a survey by The Cricket Foundation and the MCC. And 63% of 14-year-olds say they regularly see unfair play,” says theguardian.
What can fix this issue?
Most students report witnessing bad sportsmanship and unfair play. To fix an issue like this, you can train students more to understand the art of cricket or have the umpire explain why they chose a decision before someone declares unfair play.
According to Law 42, a dead ball is used when an unfair play is present but that should not affect the progress of the game. An umpire calls and signals a dead ball if one is playing unfairly.
Why should it be a school sport?
Students should be able to play cricket as a school sport to engage and develop reflexes and skills for everyday life. It can help students be the better version of themselves mentally and physically.
It teaches them the many different tactics that one can play during the game and even the lessons learned from the different scenarios just like life is growing up.
