Feb. 25 - Young Muhammad Ali knocks out Sonny Liston for first world title

On February 25, 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay shocks the odds-makers by dethroning world heavyweight boxing champ Sonny Liston in a seventh-round technical knockout. Former champ Joe Louis called it “the biggest upset in the history of boxing.”

Jeffrey Mellito is a 16-year-old junior at Colonia High School. Mellito has been living in Colonia for the past 9 years, having moved not far from Colonia from Avenel. He attended Claremont Elementary School and Colonia Middle School. Mellito enjoys playing sports like baseball and football. He is currently on varsity baseball. He also wants to have a sports or computer related job when he is older. When Mellito’s in school, he enjoys English and history. Mellito took journalism because he enjoys writing about his own and others interests. He is excited to be a part of the declaration and being part of the class.
