In Washington, D.C., Helen Taft, wife of President William Taft, and the Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, plant two Yoshino cherry trees on the northern bank of the Potomac River. The event on March 27, 1912, commemorated a gift by the Japanese government of some 3,020 cherry trees to the U.S. government.

Jeffrey Mellito is a 16-year-old junior at Colonia High School. Mellito has been living in Colonia for the past 9 years, having moved not far from Colonia from Avenel. He attended Claremont Elementary School and Colonia Middle School. Mellito enjoys playing sports like baseball and football. He is currently on varsity baseball. He also wants to have a sports or computer related job when he is older. When Mellito’s in school, he enjoys English and history. Mellito took journalism because he enjoys writing about his own and others interests. He is excited to be a part of the declaration and being part of the class.
