The Kindle Paperwhite is a portable e-reader created and sold by Amazon. They designed it to specifically read digital books, newspapers, and magazines. The first edition was released on November 19th, 2007, and sold for $399. Since then, the price has dropped to $159.
While most avid readers love to have physical books to read and collect, the Kindle Paperwhite is the perfect alternative to save money on physical books and keep more space in your house!
Kindle vs Kindle Paperwhite
While Amazon sells the Kindle Paperwhite for $159, they sell the original Kindle design for $109. The biggest difference between the two devices is that the paperwhite has a larger screen and faster page reaction time compared to the regular kindle.
Both devices hold around 16GB of memory, and battery can last up to weeks. However, if you’re looking for a cleaner look while reading and faster reaction time, spend the money and buy the Kindle Paperwhite. The screen is significantly bigger than the regular Kindle.
Kindle Unlimited
When getting your Kindle, you have the option for buying Kindle Unlimited. This subscription costs $11.99 per month, and the first three months are free.
With Kindle Unlimited, you have options to read millions of books without having to buy each book separately. Multiple users can also share the account at a time, saving everyone money at the end.
The subscription is separate from an Amazon Prime subscription, so beware of that when deciding to buy it.
Kindle vs Nook
A Nook is an e-reader similar to the Kindle, sold by Barnes & Noble. It’s simple to use, and the smallest size retails for $149.99.
The biggest difference between the Kindle and the Nook is pricing. The Nook’s cheapest and smallest tablet starts at $149, whereas the Kindles smallest tablet starts at $109. Both have 6 inch screens.
Nook’s glowlight 7.8 inch screen tablet, which is their biggest, retails at $199. While the Kindle Paperwhite is slightly smaller at only a 7 inch screen table, it is significantly cheaper at $159. Kindle screens are also known for being more touch friendly and faster than the Nook.
The Kindle is also waterproof, where the Nook is not. Kindle’s also have no glare, so if you’re reading in the sun, you can adjust the brightness and see your screen.
“I love my Kindle” Jennifer Midura, an avid reader states. “I had a Nook for a long time, but after a while it died. But since getting a Kindle, I would never switch back.”
Overall
The Kindle Paperwhite is small enough to fit into a purse on the go, and light enough where it doesn’t make your bag super heavy. The battery life lasts weeks at a time without charging. It’s very sturdy, but if you want a case to protect it, Amazon and other off brand sellers sell cases to protect your device.
“I think if you love to read, then the Kindle is definitely worth it.” Kellie Hastrup, a senior at Colonia High School states. “My brother has one and I steal it all the time. I really want to get my own.”
If you’re looking for the perfect tool to read on the beach this summer, spend the money and buy a Kindle Paperwhite!
