On this day  2001, American Airlines flight 587 crashed into the Rockaway section of Queens, shorty after taking off from New York's JFK airport. The crash killed all 260 passengers and crew on the plane, as well as five people on the ground died. The crash was caused by pilot error and unusual turbulence.
