Homework over Break???

The best gift a teacher can give their students and themselves is no homework over a break.

The holiday season is near which means school is about to go on break. People in schools everywhere are happy and looking forward to their break. The bell is about to ring and the teacher has one last announcement. The teacher gives a 10 page packet and a project to do over break. All the students sigh and their entire break is ruined.

In my opinion, teachers should not assign homework on break. There is a reason why it’s called a ‘break.’ Teachers giving homework on break aren’t giving their students the mental rest they require from school. Students always need rest and assigning more homework just defies the purpose of having a break.

Students are also busy during breaks. From spending time with their family, going on vacation, etc.. Students getting homework during a trip simply ruins their plans. While the rest of the family is out and enjoying the warm weather and the nice cool ocean, the student is stuck in the hotel room doing their homework.

Another reason teachers should not assign homework over break is that the student is kept from enjoying some quality family time. During school, students are so caught up with actually going to school and finishing homework that they forget to spend time with their own family. A break is the only time some students have to spend quality time with their families. Now teachers assigning homework over break causes the student to miss out on quality family time.

Now, I understand teachers have a curriculum to go through and need to assign work over break. In my opinion, they should make the assignments due a week after break ends. By doing this students don’t have to stress over completing all their assigned homework over break. They could do a little bit during, and save the rest for after. Giving students that leisure and freedom makes their break just that much more better.

I think teachers should not assign homework if they don’t need too. In all honesty, it won’t make the student better by assigning work over break but if the teachers have to assign homework they should make it due a week later so the students aren’t working during their break from school.
