The San Francisco 49ers were one of the most dominant teams in the NFL in the 1980s. Led by Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig and legendary coach Bill Walsh, they won 4 Super Bowls throughout the decade in 1981, 1984, 1988 and 1989.
On January 10th of 1982, the Niners faced off against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC championship. The game came down to the final minute when Montana threw a pass to tight end Dwight Clark to move the Niners ahead 28-27 with 58 seconds remaining. Clark made a spectacular fingertip catch over corner Everson Walls.
The play became known as “The Catch” and has become one of the most iconic moments in NFL history.
This play kicked off the Niners 80s dynasty as they went on to win their first Super Bowl later that year.
