Spyridon Louis of Greece won the first ever Olympic race, running a 2:58:50 in the Athens games. Since the events’ debut, the winning time has seen a significant drop. In the 2024 Olympics, a 2:58:50, would’ve finished last by about 16 minutes.
Tamirat Tola of Ethipoa won the 2024 Games with a 2:06:26, 52 minutes faster than Louis’s time and the current Olympic record. In addition to the evolution of the Olympic marathon, the overall record time for the marathon is currently 2:00:35, set by the late Kelvin Kiptum.
