Movie Review: Moana 2
After nearly a decade since her first voyage across the ocean, Disney’s talented voyager makes a comeback in Moana 2. A visually stunning and emotional sequel that both honors the legacy of the original and sets sail toward exciting new horizons.
Picking up several years after the events of the 2016 hit, Moana 2 tells a story about Moana becoming a confident leader of her people. But when a mysterious signal from beyond the known seas calls to her, Moana must embrace her role not just as a navigator of the ocean, but of destiny itself. Alongside her, she has her trusty demigod Maui whom she embarks on a journey that explores deeper Pacific mythology, ancient rivalries, and power of community.
A Risky Journey
Where the original film was a coming of age tale steeped in Polynesian mythology and personal identity, Moana 2 expands the narrative scope without losing the heart. Director David G. Derrick Jr. brings a thoughtful and authentic touch, drawing inspiration from real cultural traditions and oral histories that breathe life into every frame.
The film’s visual language is more important than ever. From the sea graphics to island graphics, this really shows Disney wanted to make this perfect. Moana 2 really shows off cultural appreciation which a lot of people seem to enjoy.
Cultural Songs
One of the biggest questions heading into Moana 2 was whether it could match the musical magic of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s unforgettable soundtrack. With a mix of returning composers and fresh talent, the sequel delivers a soundtrack that’s both culturally grounded and emotionally stirring. While there may not be a new “How Far I’ll Go,” standout tracks like “Voice of the Ocean” and “Echoes of Ancestors” have all the makings of fan favorites.
Performance
Disney continues to bring warmth, strength, and vulnerability to Moana, effortlessly capturing the character’s maturity and evolving sense of purpose. Maui shows us him doing his best to be by Moana’s side to help her face the struggles she’s in to protect her people. Fans really like how determined Moana is to make sure her island is safe and that there are more other island for more people to connect with.
Overall
The film is a celebration of legacy, leadership, and the stories that shape us. It navigates the tricky waters of sequel making with grace, offering a tale that feels both timely and timeless.
