Intro to the movie
The 1999 film “10 Things I Hate About You,” directed by Gil Junger is a fun and entertaining romantic comedy that takes place in a high school. This movie was also filmed in a real high school in Tacoma, Washington. The movie is about two sisters, Kat and Bianca Stratford, who are very different from each other. Kat Startford, played by Julia Stiles, is the independent, smart, and older sister who doesn’t care what others think. Bianca, played by Larisa Oleynik, on the other hand, is popular, cheerful, and really wants to date boys. But there’s a rule in their house set by their dad: Bianca can’t date until Kat does.
This rule causes a big problem for Bianca, because Kat doesn’t want to date anyone. So, some boys at the school, including Cameron, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who has a crush on Bianca, come up with a plan. They decide to find someone who will date Kat so that Bianca will be allowed to date too. They end up paying another student, Patrick, played by Heath Ledger, to ask Kat out. Patrick is mysterious and cool, and he agrees to the plan because he needs the money.
Main Plot
At first, Kat doesn’t like Patrick and tries to avoid him. But Patrick doesn’t give up easily. He starts spending more time with her and tries to show her that he is a nice guy. Slowly, Kat begins to trust him, and they start to like each other. There are a lot of funny and awkward moments as Patrick tries to win Kat over, and it’s interesting to watch how their relationship grows.
One of the best parts of the movie is its humor. There are lots of jokes and funny situations that make you laugh. The movie also has some sweet and heartfelt moments, especially when Kat reads a poem in class called “10 Things I Hate About You.” This poem talks about the 10 things Kat wrote about Patrick that she hates about him. This scene is very touching because it shows how much Kat’s feelings for Patrick have changed from the beginning. Lucas Belo, a big fan of this movie talked about this part. “I think it’s the most touching part of the movie. It really shows how much Kat started to care about Patrick and how her feelings changed.” The movie teaches some important lessons about being true to yourself, not judging people based on appearances, and the importance of family. Kat and Bianca learn to understand each other better, and both sisters change in positive ways by the end of the movie.
Box Office
With a running time of 1 hour and 37 minutes, this movie is rated PG-13 because of some mild language, mentions alcohol and drug use, and sex-related comments
The original budget was $30,000,000, and in the original release on March 31, 1999, it reeled in $53,478,166 worldwide
Based on a Classic Play
The movie is based on the famous play “The Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare, but it’s set in modern times with teenagers. This makes the story feel newer and relatable, even if you haven’t read the play. The actors do a great job bringing the characters to life. Heath Ledger is especially charming and funny. Julia Stiles shows both the tough and vulnerable sides of her character very well.
Review
Overall, “10 Things I Hate About You” is a great movie for anyone who likes romance, comedy, and interesting characters. It’s easy to understand, has a good message, and is a lot of fun to watch. One of the best scenes in this movie is towards the end when Patrick sings the song “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” to Kat on the football field. He does this with the help of the school band during gym class, and it’s one of the funniest and heartfelt scenes in the movie. Alyssa Wray, another advid viewer of the movie, spoke about this part and said it was one of her favorite scenes in all movies. “It was such a nice scene and helped show Kat that Patrick really cared about her.” I would recommend it to middle school students and anyone looking for a lighthearted and enjoyable movie.
