With Halloween quickly approaching, it is the month of doing many different spooky festivities. Something that many people do to get into the scary season is watch scary movies. One of my favorite movies to watch to get into the vibe is “Coraline”.
Summary
A young girl Coraline Jones and her parents move into an old house in their new town. With Coraline not having anything to do in this new boring town, she decides to explore this “new” house of hers. While exploring this house, she finds a weird tiny hidden door that is all bricked up. During the night she decides to cross this door that leads her to a replica of her life except it seemed to good to be true.
“Coraline” Statistics
“Coraline” first came out in 2009, directed by Henry Selick. This movie has a global box office gross of $186 million worldwide and a budget of $60 million. When “Coraline” first came out, the movie made a total of $16.8 million ((14% of the total gross).
The movie run time is 115 minutes and is rated PG however it is recommended for 10 and up. Anyone under 10 may be frightened when watching this movie due to its darker meaning.
“Coraline” Production
This movie had a total of 450 people working on the animations; possibly because of the amount of facial expressions that the main character had. She had around 207,000 facial combinations for Coraline as well as 6,000 unique faces from using 3D printing. There was also well over 130 sets built on over 50 stages for this movie. Those 50+ stages were the most used ever in any stop motion feature because it covered over 4 acres.
Reviews
A user on IMDb states ” Good and imaginative story, delighting visuals, creepiness from the beginning and a couple scary scenes make this an enjoyable film.”
Another user states “The characters (including Coraline) aren’t CONSISTENTLY charming enough to engage us emotionally. Coraline has some great special effects and I would recommend seeing it on that basis alone. But unfortunately one must also focus on the story, which clearly has not fulfilled its potential.”
I personally think that the movie “Coraline” is a spooky classic that I keep finding myself going back to each October, even in months that aren’t the spooky season. I think that this movie is just absolutely incredible especially for it to be a stop motion movie.
