The popular TV network known as ABC Family announced in 2015 that they would be making changes in 2016. The biggest change being a name change. ABC Family decided that it was best to change the network name to Freeform. Despite the name change the network will still remain on the same channel. The network made this decision hoping that the name will be more appealing to teens and young adults, drawing a larger audience.
On top of this the network announced a new tv program to be released in 2016. Based off of best selling novel The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, the network created the tv series Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. Like the book series this show follows the life of main character Clary who lived most of her life believing she was a normal human being. However, she is quickly thrown into her reality and finds out that she is not who she thought and has to face many obstacles in this fantasy tv program.
The changes to the network do not seem too drastic as they made sure to keep around fan favorite tv shows. Returning in January 2016 are a few familiar shows including, Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, and Young and Hungry.
Pretty Little Liars has been a huge hit for ABC Family over the years and clearly they can’t let go of the show, despite the original plot being finished. Pretty Little Liars jumps five years forward in their new season aired on January 12, 2016. The show follows the life of the same main characters seen in the prior seasons. As always fans can not wait for this suspenseful show to begin again.
The Fosters is one of the TV network’s more serious shows. The show deals with easy relatable topics and struggles as well as making people more aware of world issues. It follows the lives of members of a foster family and gives each character their own story. Story lines of the characters include family, relationships, dealing with racism and homophobia, trying to fit in, bullying and pursuing dreams. The winter season premiere aired on January 25,2016.
Young & Hungry is one of the shorter TV programs, only showing 30 minute episodes. Starting February 3, 2016 the comedy will return for a new season. The show follows the life of main character, Gabi, who was hired as a personal chef by entrepreneur Josh.
