After an intense huddle the Varsity baseball team is ready to enter the extra inning

One Friday, April 8th, Colonia High School’s Varsity baseball team defeated Metuchen with a score of 4-3. Playing the game on the Colonia field Metuchen had to drive home after a devastating loss.

Colonia took the field first and Metuchen came in rather loud. With every team a spectator would expect a certain amount of spirit coming from both teams. But when the viewers are complaining about the team just screaming random phrases, something is wrong. Metuchen’s team has great chemistry, and a most of the fans in the stands were from Metuchen. Just a quick tip Metuchen you need to quiet down.

The captains on the team this year are: A.J. Scherb, Austin Galea, Deondre Stines, Kyle Rajcevic, Lee Tamberello, Michael Parry, Michael Wilson, and Rocco Ferrentino. These eight boys are all seniors this year, second year varsity players are include Ferrentino, Parry, Rajcevic, Tamberello, and Wilson.

The first run of the game was scored by Metuchen at the top of the third, junior Matt Volpe ran from second to home on a pop fly. Colonia then came back in the bottom of the third, when sophomore Frank Lehman ran into home from a line-drive done by Captain Michael Parry.

Senior Austin Galea drove in the next run by assisting sophomore Jason Hilenski go from second to home plate. Making the score 2-2 by the end of the fourth. During the bottom of the seventh inning player Rocco Ferrentino got hit with the foul ball  and was down for five minutes.

Moving into an extra inning Colonia brought in a replacement pitcher, Michael Parry for Junior Zachary Gregor. Parry pitched a tough inning, closing out Metuchen quick. Colonia went to bat, hitter Jason Hilenski ran to first and switched out with Junior Varsity player Matt Zawacki. Matt Zawacki made it home scoring the winning run, based off a sacrifice from Parry, ending the game 4-3 in the eighth inning.

When asked Coach Esposito named two seniors for the season as star players/ people to look out for. Next time you go out to the baseball game look out for Michael Wilson (senior) and Michael Parry (senior). These two captains are truly something to watch and even make game winning changes in the this sport. Expectations of the season are to be very competitive. Coach Esposito believes his boys can be the white division champs and make the top schools in the state list.

Michael Wilson plays short-stop and is number seven, has been playing for 13 years and will be continuing his baseball career at Stony Brook University. “ He has a real chance at getting drafted this year.” Says head coach Esposito.

Number eight Michael Parry plays third base and pitcher, has been playing for 13 years. Parry will not be playing baseball in college but will be attending Rutgers University as a business major. “I wanted to spend more time focusing on my education” claims Parry when asked why he wouldn’t be furthering his baseball career.

Both of the young men said it was an honor to be acknowledged by their coach in this way. After playing on his team for three years, both boys were appreciative that Coach Esposito saw them in this light and want to make the most of their senior years.
