Released on Sept 17, 2010, “Easy A” is one of my favorites, and mirrors how high school can be today. This movie stars Emma Stone, Amanda Bynes, and Penn Badgley. Disney+ and Hulu have this movie for streaming with a subscription.
Movie Information
The film grossed a worldwide total of $75,050,531 at the box office with a budget of $8 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The movie is 1 hour and 32 minutes long with an age rating of PG-13 in the USA.
“Easy A” has high ratings, with 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, 7/10 on IMDb, and 4/5 on Common Sense Media.
Synopsis
“Easy A” is about a sophomore girl, Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone), who lies about her love life to her best friend Rhiannon (Aly Michalka). Students and staff start to approach Olive after the whole school finds out about these lies, making them her whole life.
After people see her at this harlot, they begin to ask her if she is with them in exchange for money. Olive worries that this will ruin the way her crush of years will see her. Olive’s crush, Woodchuck Todd (Penn Badgley), helps her find herself in this situation.
High School Today
Although the whole movie does not mirror the real high school experience, some things can. One thing that is real in high school today is how fast the lies spread. When Olive’s lies get spread around, they easily get misunderstood and are different from the original.
If Olive were to wear her wardrobe today, her school would automatically send her home before she got to school. Her wardrobe in the movie after she starts her lies consists of corsets and other revealing clothing.
Another thing that differs from the movie and high school today is the school’s structure. I have seen many films with lockers and hallways outside, but I have yet to see one like that in person. In the movie, they also talk in the bathroom in between classes, which we are not allowed to do at Colonia High School in New Jersey.
Student Opinions
I love this movie so much. I tried getting my sister and cousin to watch it because I highly recommend it. This movie is funny and is very lighthearted, and it will put you in a good mood. If I were to rate this movie out of ten, I would rate it an eight.
Dontae Lamb is a 26-year-old college student and also thinks that this movie mirrors high school today. “I think Easy A does relate to high school today. People lie about their sexual encounters all the time to try to fit in, especially in their teenage years. Teenagers lie to avoid embarrassment, but usually get caught in a lie, which ends up embarrassing them more. I think it’s a pretty good movie because it shows a realistic point of view from what would happen to a girl in schools today if they had that label,” said Lamb.
I agree with everything Lamb said. Today, many people lie, thinking they won’t get caught. When they are caught, you don’t know what could spring from it.
Sophia Vitale, a senior at Colonia High School, does not believe that this movie accurately reflects high school today.
“I like it, but I don’t think that it’s as accurate anymore because there wasn’t a lot of social media in it, which would probably make rumors go around the school even faster, and because of social media, people would probably move on faster from it too.”
I also agree with Vitale, but I think that with the use of social media, the rumors can get worse.
