On this day in 1942, the famous battle of Coral Sea began during World War 2. This was the first modern naval-air battle as the air craft carriers fired no shots at one another, only fighting with fighter plans which would take off from the decks of the carriers. The battle would be a victory for the Japanese despite their loss of 70 warplanes as compared to the 66 American losses.
