This is a picture to help understand what portion sizes should look like.

At every restaurant portion sizes are different. How are we supposed to know if we’re eating enough or maybe too much?

According to Womenshealthmag.com, there’s a difference between “portion size” and “serving size.” A portion is the amount you pile on your plate, while a serving is a standard measurement of food, such as a cup or an ounce. The best way to determine the amount of food in a serving is to measure it out.

According to Webmd.com, restaurants usually serve one person enough food for two or three. One thing they suggest to do when going out to eat is to order a half portion. You could even order something from the kids menu. They also suggest to split a meal with a friend. Boxing up half of the full sized meal before eating is a good idea as well. The number of calories we’re supposed to be getting depends on age, gender, and how much physical activity you get. A healthy balance foods consists of 1.5-2.5 cups of fruits, 2.5-3.5 cups of vegetables, 6-10 ounces of grain, 3 cups nonfat or low dairy foods, 5-7 ounces of protein, 5-8 teaspoons of oils, and 170-400 calories from solid fats and added sugars.

The amount of food that is given to us when we go out to eat is most of the time, too much. Most restaurants give very large portions which could feed more than one person. After a while of eating that much, it causes people to gain weight. Portion sizes could make a difference in the amount of overweight people in the US as well as the world. If everyone started to portion their foods, it would be easier for people to stay healthy and in the right weight range.
