Written on April 25, 2011 by Veronica Roth, Divergent is a science fiction novel and published by HarperCollins Children’s Books.

The novel Divergent is the first of the trilogy, as series of young-adult dystopian novels set in the Divergent universe. The genres of the book are Science Fiction, Utopian and dystopian fiction, and Young adult fiction. The novel Divergent is about a society which divided into 5 fractions in the city of Chicago. Abnegation the selfless, Dauntless the brave, Erudite the intelligent, Candor the honest, and Amity the peaceful. When teenagers in the city turn the age of 16, they must either choose to stay in their faction of birth, or transfer into another faction.

After the choice, each teen takes an aptitude test which manipulates the simulations the faction you could go to. The book is based of a girl, Beatrice who needs to choose a faction, after picking her choice and moving on to the aptitude test. She then sees that her outcome comes out to be Divergent from the aptitude test. Divergent means that you’re able to do any of the four, they are people who can manipulate any of the simulations. Most Divergents have an aptitude for two factions, but Beatrice has three, Erudite, Abnegation, and Dauntless. She chooses to be a part of faction Dauntless and changed  her name to Tris.

After joining this faction, she then found a right man who the turned her life upside down. This man was also a Divergent, which then leaves to a heartbreaking ending.

Throughout the book, there is fantasy violence; it includes markers of genre, and a fractured society. As 16-year old Beatrice who names herself as Tris, she chooses to live in the “brave” faction. In this faction, members try to outdo each other physically and act like daredevils to prove their fearlessness.  The initiation process is brutal and bloody, and kills or seriously injures a few characters.

Also, there is romance throughout the book. From lingering looks, to a few kissing sessions, characters also express fear of going too far, too fast. The actress who played as Tris was Katniss Everdeen, a strong generous, and beautifully flawed female protagonist.

In my opinion, this is a great book for teens. Written in a well format,  Divergent was the first book of four others. It is a great book for teens, the book includes a lot of details and explains each part. Divergent is a science fiction novel. From reading a lot of science fiction novels, I feel as if Divergent was the over-all best one. Also Divergent is a movie, which is also one of my all time favorites. the characters who played roles in the book were also described with full description that I was able to imagine exactly how they looked in my head.

Shailene Woodley was nominated best actress in action movie during the Critics choice award in 2015. Also the novel Divergent was Goodreads Choice Awards Best Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction.

About the Author

Roth wrote the book as a college student. With a tremendous amount of first book buzz, the hype was definitely well-deserved. While writing the article, she used different devices that fans of the dystopian novels will recognize–a compartmentalized society, a misfit protagonist, dangerous secrets, and a cliffhanger ending — but still manages to create an unstoppable plot that’s remarkably original. The charters throughout the book are also described in a very well matter. For instance, Tris is shown to be a refreshingly smart and self-possessed 16-year-old protagonist. Readers are falling in love with her leading man right along her. This is an impressive and provoking start to  a fascinating series.
