CHS Varsity Volleyball Figuring out how to beat JFK

On May 2, 2018 Colonia High School’s Boys’ Varsity Volleyball team came over with an other win against JFK. Their season seems to be a success and hoping to carry out the rest of the season winning.

In the first set, Colonia lost 25 to 23. Sophomore Claudio Suwu (9) saved a spike from JFK without hitting the ground continuing the play. Although blocking many spikes, Colonia gave up one point to tie the score at 23. JFK would later win the first Set 25 to 23, taking the momentum with them.

Colonia had many fans on their side of the bleachers. Colonia’s JV Volleyball team was also sitting there, they would cheer for their varsity members every time they would score a point trying to fire them up.

Colonia would find this fire starting the second set as JFK hit the ball out on their opening serve. After Colonia got their fifth point, JFK called for a timeout with a score 2 to 5 in the second set.  Senior Joe Pocchio (11) and Junior Luke Valeriano (0) block a spike. Both Pocchio and Valeriano finished the game with five blocks, playing a large defensive role. Matt Zwiebel would spike on JFK for the 21 point putting Colonia in a position to win the set.  With further great plays by the Colonia offense, they took the second 25-12.

During this last set everyone is on edge, as the winner of it would win the match. JFK would hit the ball out numerous times giving Colonia a strong start.  Pocchio would block a spike later in the set, keeping the momentum with the Patriots. JFK would hit the ball out once again, giving Colonia the win in the set 25-12, and the overall match.  17 kills from junior Sahil Sangu and 30 assists from Junior Luke Valeriano, were strong difference makers in securing a win.

Pocchio stated on the team’s performance, “we have a young team but were a good team. We are 13 wins and 6 losses. We do have a lot of potential but we don’t seem to use it, but after a win I feel accomplished that we worked as a team to get to the next game.”  Colonia seems to be playing well and they’re moving on to the championships.

Matt Scala, a senior at Colonia High School, noted his thoughts on the season so far, “we are having a good season, broken a lot of records and have beaten teams we don’t normally beat,  and even won division for the first time. We could have played better this game, but a win is a win.”

1000 Digs!

During the second set, Senior Captain Kyle Kirejevas got his 1000th dig. During a timeout Colonia coaches and stat member for volleyball handed him balloons and congratulated him for what he achieved.  Kirejevas finished the match with 14 digs proving why he has reached such an accomplishment.  Kirejevas was in peak form this season as well, entering the match with 21 aces and 262 digs this season alone.
